AIHPS Spotlight
Each month we get an insight of our AIHPS members - this month's "Spotlight" is on Robert Griew...
What is your current position?
Robert Griew is Director of his own health consulting company, working in Australia and the Asia Pacific region. He also holds a conjoint appointment as an Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of NSW. What is your role in AIHPS?
In addition he serves as a Board member of the Australian Institute of Health Policy Studies (AIHPS).
What positions have you held?
Robert has just finished four years as CEO of the Northern Territory Department of Health and Community Services. During that time he chaired the National PUblic Health Partnership and the standing committtees on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services for both Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council and the Community and Disability Services Ministers Advisory Council. He also chaired Ministerial working groups that examined remote area renal services and child health and wellbeing.
Prior to working in the NT, Robert held a range of senior jobs in health services. He ran the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, following the transfer or responsibility from ATSIC to the Commonwealth Health Department in 1995. He has also run the Commonwealth's Aged and Community Care programs and the AIDS Council of NSW.
What motivated you to work in the health sector/chosen field?
Robert was always interested in work in human services. His first jobs were in children's services and it is through his interest in early childhood policy that he joined the public service. He has always been engaged in children's interests and believed that we need to do better in the integration of thinking about child development, health and welfare.
In the early 1980s he did a student placement in an Aboriginal community on the NSW south coast. In the mid 1990s he became responsible for the national Aboriginal health program. Both experiences reinforced his belief in the imperative of integrated children's policy.
What do you hope to achieve in your position?
He is interested in the possibility of promoting Aboriginal health policy and intersectoral thinking about children's health development and welfare through his involvement with AIHPS.
