Strategic Directions
Here is a summary update of AIHPS work and research program.
Roundtables
In 2008, we will be holding a number of Roundtables and Forums to discuss key issues that arise from the Health Reform process and the AIHPS research streams. The next of these will be the Citizen Engagement Summit to be held in September 2008 (see below) in
Brisbane . Further information about this and other events will be advertised to all subscribers as information becomes available.
Seminars
Two seminars have already been held in 2008 and we have now made each of these talks available as a podcast along with a copy of the presented slides via the Seminar section of the AIHPS website
National Prevention Summit
A National Prevention Summit was convened by the Australian Institute of Health Policy Studies
A National Prevention Summit was convened by the Australian Institute of Health Policy Studies (AIHPS) and the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation on April 9, 2008. The aim was to bring together leaders from local, state and federal government, non-government organisations, community, business and academic sectors to discuss and refine a future agenda for promoting health and preventing disease and illness in . Over 100 key leaders attended the event, which was opened by The Hon. Nicola Roxon MP, Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, followed by presentations from Dr Mick Adams, Chairperson, National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO), Dr Lyn Roberts, CEO, National Heart Foundation (Australia) and Mr Peter Wills, AC, Deputy Chairman, Research Australia Ltd.
The resulting document from the Summit - A Platform for Advancing the Health and Wellbeing of all Australians - informed discussions in the Health Stream at the Australia 2020 Summit in Canberra the following week. It is also expected that this Platform document will inform the work programs of the Australian Government's recently established National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission and the National Preventative Health Taskforce.
A plan for the next steps of this process is currently being formulated and will be disseminated to those who attended the event in due course.
Further information in relation to the event, including the discussion paper, program and those attending the event have now been posted on the AIHPS website.
Consumer Engagement Project
The Consumer Engagement Project continues to make excellent progress and the case studies monograph has been finalised and will be available more publicly from the beginning of May.
In September a National event will be held to look at the outcomes of the ongoing research project and then to hold a deliberative forum workshop session to analyse and discuss ways forward in different thematic areas. This event will be a novel and innovative approach to engage participants in a technique that has been successfully by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) in
Western Australia .
Further information about this project, case studies reports and event information will be posted on the AIHPS website in due course.
ANZHP
The Australian Health Policy (ANZHP) open-access journal is ready to receive manuscripts that promote debate and understanding about health policy developments and practice in the regions.
A number of manuscripts have been published recently around the workforce and health reform issues.
