With the recent announcement of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission at the end of February, we are starting to see how the health reform process might take shape over the coming months.
The AIHPS Board and all of its academic partners held a 2-day planning meeting in Sydney in early February. It is more than 3 years since AIHPS was first formally established, so it was timely to review progress and to forge a future work program that builds on our achievements to date and the new environment that is currently evolving in Australia.

Strategic Directions
Here is a summary update of AIHPS work and research program.
Roundtables
In 2008, we will be holding a number of Roundtables and Forums to discuss key issues that arise from the Health Reform process and the AIHPS research streams. The first of these - the National Prevention Summit - will be taking place on April 8 and 9 (see more information below). Details of other events will be advertised to all subscribers as information becomes available.
These will be advertised to all subscribers as information becomes available.
Seminars
Two seminars have already been held and we are now making each of these talks available after the event as a podcast along with a copy of the presented slides.
Professor Richard Southby
Health Care Reform: Looking back to go forward - 26th February, Melbourne
Professor Richard Southby is the Executive Emeritus Dean and Distinguished Professor of Global Health at the George Washington University Medical Center. In 1975, he was a Commissioner on the Australian Hospitals and Health Services Commission and was Director of Health Services Research and Teaching at the University of Sydney.
His seminar presentation gave a wonderful analysis of how the SAX Commission developed and implemented its work program more than 30 years ago and he reflected on similarities and differences to the current environment.

National Prevention Summit
AIHPS in conjunction with VicHealth is convening a National Prevention Summit of health community and other leaders during the second week of April. The National Prevention Summit is an invitation only event that will be launched with a cocktail function on the evening of the 8th April, followed by a full day program on the 9th April 2008.
The opening cocktail function is being hosted by The Hon. Daniel Andrews MP, Minister for Health (Victoria). The Federal Health Minister, The Hon. Nicola Roxon MP, will open the 9th April Summit event with as a keynote speaker.
Further information in relation to the event, including the discussion paper, program and those attending the event will be posted on the AIHPS website as they become available.
Consumer Engagement Project
The Consumer Engagement Project continues to make excellent progress and the case studies have almost been finalised and made available more publicly. These case studies will be posted on the AIHPS website by the end of April.
In August/September a National event will be held to look at the outcomes of the ongoing research project and then to hold a deliberative forum workshop session to analyse and discuss ways forward in different thematic areas. This event will be a novel and innovative approach to engage participants in a technique that has been successfully by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) in Western Australia.
Further information about this project, case studies reports and event information will be posted on the AIHPS website in due course.
