AIHPS Spotlight

Each month we get an insight of our AIHPS members - this month's "Spotlight" is on Mitch Messer, Chair of the AIHPS Board...

What is your current position?

I am the Director of Thinking Beyond Pty Ltd a company that provides support and services in areas such as project management, strategic planning and policy development.  I am also the Chairperson of Consumers Health Forum of Australia, the national voice for health consumers.  It helps shape Australia's health system by representing and involving consumers in health policy and program development.

What is your role in AIHPS?

I am currently the Chair of the AIHPS Board.

What motivated you to work in the health sector/chosen field?

I have had a long involvement in the sector as a consumer and an advocate.  I believe that the health system needs input from all parts of the community not just the bureaucrats and medical/health professionals.  Consumers use the various health services that make up our 'system' every day and can provide a balance to the views of those who fund, oversee and provide care.  They are well placed to provide feedback and ideas on ways the system can be improved.

What do you hope to achieve in your position?

I hope to help strengthen the partnerships that are necessary between all stakeholders to improve healthcare in Australia.  It is through partnerships that we can reduce the unecessary bickering that occurs throughout our various health care systems and allow improved health outcomes for Australia.  There is much spoken of consumers being at the centre of health care - I want that to translate into being active partners and not have others speak on behalf of consumers as has been the case in the past.
