AIHPS ARC Linkage Grant
A collaborative team, of AIHPS and some other partners, has been successful in its application for an ARC Linkage Grant. The project entitled Developing new methods for building health policy capacity in Australia (2007-2010) is an action research project which aims to build capacity for health policy development, implementation and evaluation in Australia.
It aims to do this by developing new methods for building health policy capacity. The need for strengthening health policy capacity is widely recognised, however there is currently little evidence on which to base capacity building initiatives.
For more information please visit the ARC Linkage Project page which will be updated with reports and information as the project progresses.
ANZHP
The Australian New Zealand Health Policy (ANZHP) open-access journal is ready to receive manuscripts that promote debate and understanding about health policy developments and practice in the regions.
For article submissions and for further information visit the ANZHP (BioMed Central) website

AIHPS Spotlight
Each month we get an insight of our AIHPS members - this month's "Spotlight" is on John Walsh...

What is your current position?
John Walsh is Partner in the Advisory (Performance Improvement) unit of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, where he has worked for over 15 years. He is also co-leader of the PriceWaterhouse Coopers National Health practice.
What is your role in AIHPS?
Board member.
What motivated you to work in the health sector/chosen field?
In the early 1980s, John was motivated by his own disability (quadriplegia) and profession (actuary) to gain a keener understanding of the planning processes and materials behind Australia's health and welfare systems.
He initiated a data collection system which led to the Australian Registry of Spinal Cord Injury, an experience which began a long term fascination with the links between policy, planning, funding and service delivery in welfare systems. In particular, John has sought to achieve a recognition that a continuum of outcomes need to be monitored and measured in welfare systems, from financial right through to health outcomes and satisfaction of both consumers and workforce.
John has been a Board member of the NSW Motor Accident Authority and the NSW HomeCare Service, and statutory actuary to workers compensation authorities of both NSW and South Australia.
What do you hope to achieve in your position?
I am hopeful of contributing to a more rigorous set of expectations around health and welfare program planning, funding, monitoring and reporting.
