The interview outcomes report is now completed and this paper discusses the themes emerging from a series of qualitative interviews exploring the use of consumer engagement in policy development. The interviews were part of a research project conducted by the Australian Institute of Health Policy Studies (AIHPS) to examine consumer engagement in Australian health policy.

AIHPS Spotlight

Each month we get an insight of our AIHPS members - this month's "Spotlight" is on Philippa Smith...

What is your current position?

For the past 10 years I have been CEO of The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA).  From August I will be a director and consultant "at large".

What is your role in AIHPS?

I am a director and member of the AIHPS Board.

What motivated you to work in the health sector/chosen field?

My interest is good public policy.  Accessibility of quality health care and preventative health strategies are often the poor cousins.  Going forward there will need to be even more emphasis on the coordination of primary health care and community backup.

My former work at ASFA, as Commonwealth Ombudsman, at the NSW Health Care Complaints Unit, ACA and CHF, have all highlighted the importance of reviewing health policy and strategies through the prism of the consumer and likely community needs in the longer term.

What do you hope to achieve in your position?

To contribute to good research and debate as a catalyst for practical outcomes.
